High-speed trains to connect the entire Valencian Community by 2027

The Mediterranean Corridor project will seamlessly connect Alicante, Valencia and Castellón

The future of travel in the Valencian Community is quite literally speeding up. Spain’s Minister of Transport Óscar Puente has confirmed that by 2027, the entire region will be connected by high-speed trains, thanks to major investments in the Mediterranean Corridor project.

This ambitious infrastructure overhaul has already seen a record-breaking 1.3 billion euros invested in 2024 alone, with key construction projects currently underway in Castellón, Valencia and Alicante.

Speaking at an event in Castellón last week, Minister Puente asked passengers to be patient as the exact deadlines haven’t been outlined yet, but several elements of the overall project are already underway.

Later this year, the second mixed-gauge railway line between Valencia and Castellón will be completed and the Valencia - La Encina high-speed line is expected to wrap up in about 18 months. Meanwhile, in Alicante, work has already begun on six new international-gauge railway lines, set to be completed by mid-2026.

Once operational, this network will create a regional AVE, linking Castellón, Valencia and Alicante seamlessly, with potential stops in Xàtiva, Villena, Orihuela, Elche and Sagunto.

With all of these works happening in the background, the Mediterranean Corridor is progressing at an unprecedented pace, with projects underway on every section from France to Algeciras. This is a major shift from 2018, when nearly 40% of the project hadn’t even been planned.

“We have executed works worth 1.306 billion euros in 2024 alone, exceeding the forecasts that I myself recently made in Parliament and which, putting it into perspective, represent 108 million a month, 25 million a week or 3.7 million euros executed every day,” Minister Puente stressed.

While a high-speed rail connection throughout the Valencian Community will be a huge boost, it’s not such great news elsewhere. A few days ago, Spain’s main operator Renfe announced that it will be cutting some of its less profitable routes, a move that will have a hugely negative impact on Andalucía.
