Benidorm bans firecrackers and implements earlier closing times for patron saint festivities
The unofficial capital of the Costa Blanca, Benidorm will celebrate its Festes Majors Patronals next month
Benidorm is gearing up for its annual Festes Majors Patronals celebrations next month with a raft of new security measures, including restrictions on the times people are allowed to set off bangers.
The patron saint festivities will run between November 8 and 13 this year and thousands of visitors are expected to descend on the city to take part in the exciting activities that have been lined up. But to ensure that things don’t spiral out of control, the City Council is implementing a few rules.
One of the new measures is a ban on setting off firecrackers during siesta time (2.30pm - 4.30pm) and in the early morning hours (2am - 10am). This is to "facilitate the rest of all residents" and to minimise disruptions to daily life, according to Councillor for Festivities, Mariló Cebreros.
Furthermore, night clubs will have to close completely by 6am, in addition to stopping music at 4am. The aim of this regulation is to make it easier for cleaners to do their job and, of course, to reduce noise pollution.
The council hopes that residents and visitors alike will fall in with the new rules during fiesta time so that there can be a better “balance between partying and relaxing.”
“Although many of us will be enjoying ourselves and celebrating, there are also many residents who have to continue working these days to provide a service to those of us who are celebrating and those who visit us, so it is necessary to combine this fun with respect and relaxation for others,” the councillor added.
The city council has been busy this week meeting with festival groups, such as the Associació de Penyes Verge del Sofratge, to inform them of the new measures and to gather feedback.
