ARCHIVED - Ten times over the alcohol limit at the wheel of a 40-ton HGV in Lorca
A driver from Belarus was stopped and arrested on the AP-7 motorway as he headed for Almería
From time to time there are alarming cases reported by the Guardia Civil of HGV drivers found to be well in excess of the legal limit of alcohol in their bloodstream, but the most recent incident is one of the most extreme with the driver concerned having been as much as ten times over the limit.
The 41-year-old from Belarus was driving his empty 40-ton articulated truck in the direction of Almería on the A-7 motorway on 23rd October when various drivers called the 112 emergency services line to report the vehicle’s erratic behaviour, and Guardia officers on motorcycles managed to intercept it near the Hospital Rafael Méndez in Lorca. Two breathalyser tests gave readings of 1.59 and 1.53 milligrams of alcohol per litre of air exhaled, while the legal limit for professional drivers is just 0.15 mg.
Inside the cab officers found two empty cartons of wine and a half-empty bottle of vodka.
Another HGV was stopped in order for its driver to undertake the task of removing the Belarus national’s vehicle from the road, and it was then immobilized at the industrial estate of La Torrecilla while the case was placed in the hands of the courts of Lorca.
The very next day a similar incident was reported in Alcantarilla, where the driver of an ambulance which was called out to the scene of a road accident was found to be eight times over the limit.
(Click here for details regarding the alcohol limit for drivers in Spain, and what they mean in terms of how many drinks are needed for the limit to be exceeded).
The case in Lorca is the fifth of its kind in the Region of Murcia in 2019, following the detentions of drivers in January on the N-344 in Jumilla, in February on the N-340 in Alhama de Murcia and again in February after the lorry concerned overturned alongside the RM F-25 in San Pedro del Pinatar, shedding its load of mandarins in a roadside ditch.
