ARCHIVED - Ryanair cancels dozens of July flights.....here we go again say passengers
This afternoon social media is awash with angry posts from Ryanair passengers who had booked flights for July and have today received messages cancelling their bookings.
Although flights to Murcia are included, messages have also been sent to passengers who had booked flights for Alicante, Malaga and other Spanish destinations.
When the airline originally announced that it would be resuming flights from the beginning of July passengers flooded social media groups with questions about whether fellow expats believed that the airline would be allowed to fly into Spain from the 1st July, many potential holidaymakers concerned that should they book, their flights would be cancelled and they would find themselves caught in the endless “voucher-loop” which has become the norm since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Many respondees warned potential travellers about the rapidly changing situation here in Spain and the seemingly endless extensions to the state of emergency which have left the country in lockdown for more than 2 months and with a travel ban on international arrivals until June 15th.
Others were convinced that the airline was doing little more than boosting its cash reserves by selling flights it had no intention of operating and would cancel nearer to the flight date, so this afternoon there are a good deal of “told you so” messages being posted in response to anguished “my flight has been cancelled “ posts.
Ryanair recently warned that it would be cutting up to 3,000 jobs in response to the coronavirus pandemic, would also impose unpaid leave, pay cuts of up to 20 per cent and close some bases, “until traffic recovers” , which it is quoted as saying will not reach the levels currently enjoyed before the Covid-19 pandemic for “at least two years”
Ever watchful of finances, the airline is reported to be in talks with Boeing about reducing aircraft deliveries in the next 24 months.
The UK government has continued to advise those considering holidays in Spain against all non-essential travel abroad, and the country currently imposes a 14- day quarantine on anyone entering Spain. Tourists are currently not permitted to enter the country for a holiday, and although in theory this could change by the beginning of July or some agreement be reached permitting tourism to resume, at the moment the Spanish government is making soothing noises to the international media, but then imposing further restrictions on a daily basis.
Tomorrow the wearing of masks in public places becomes compulsory in Spain and at this moment parliament is still locked in fierce debate as the Prime Minister attempts to secure yet another extension to the state of emergency. In theory he has the votes, but in spite of the media reporting to foreigners that the vote is in the bag, nothing is ever 100% guaranteed in Spain!
At the moment, only Spanish residents may enter the country and the police are refusing entry to those without a valid reason to enter; just yesterday three German tourists were refused entry to the Balearic Islands and were put on a plane and sent back to Germany!
But Ryanair passengers should exercise caution if booking any early flights; Ryanair customers will not be able to get a refund if their flight is running!
Which says on its webpage:
Their response is: “It’s a huge risk, even if you are willing to quarantine at the end of your summer holiday. Come July, if Ryanair starts to cancel flights again, you could be left waiting months for a refund. Hundreds of Ryanair customers from March are still waiting for refunds, despite claims the company has paid back most people from that period. Just weeks ago the company said it could take up to six months for a refund, too. You likely won’t be able to get any form of insurance either, especially to cover you for Covid-19 illnesses, so it would be a risk all round.”
No-one can say that those booking the early flights weren´t warned!!!!
