ARCHIVED - Passengers through Spanish airports dropped by 99.4 percent in April
Corvera airport only handled 22 passengers in the whole month and Alicante was 99.8% down!
The true extent of the lockdown effect caused by the Covid-19 virus can be seen in the traffic figures for the network of Spanish airports run by operator Aena for April 2020, which showed a 99.4% drop when compared to the same month in 2019.
Only 141,014 passengers passed through all of the principal airports in Spain during the month of April, compared to 23 million in the same month last year.
Spanish air traffic manager, Enaire, has reported that in April it managed 9,627 flights, 173,700 fewer than in the same month during 2019, representing a decrease of 94.7%.
The April data from both operators is a reflection of the virtually total cessation of activity due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
After the declaration of the state of alarm in mid-March, air operations have been limited to essential flights bringing in medical supplies and essential products, as well as others to facilitate the return of Spanish nationals and residents and flights to permit foreigners and non-residents to return to their countries of origin.
At the moment the standstill looks set to continue throughout May and possibly into June.
There are three key articles which help to explain the scenario in May and possibly June:

Of the total passengers, 126,066 were registered on commercial flights. Of these, 72,233 were on domestic routes (99% less) and 53,833 flew to international destinations ( a fall of 99.7%).
The Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas airport registered the highest number of passengers of the Aena network in April (46,743); followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, with 25,307; Gran Canaria, with 15,650; Tenerife North, with 9,253, and Palma de Mallorca, with 8,955, all of them registering falls of between 98-99% of their normal traffic levels.
Locally, Alicante-Elche airport lost 99.8% of its traffic with just 2,378 passengers; Valencia Manises also had the same percentage fall but only 1,253 passengers, and Corvera-Murcia, only had 22 passengers in total!.
The figures produced include a total number of operations (landings and take-offs) covering commercial and passenger services, which can include for example police helicopters, private planes and fire or emergency services.
