ARCHIVED - Murcia police acquire drones to monitor inaccessible areas in the municipality
The drones will also be used for crowd control and emergency situations
The local police force in the city of Murcia are now equipped for the first time with drones in order for them to monitor areas which are not easily accessible, it was announced on Monday, with the two devices acquired capable of reaching an altitude of 6,000 metres and flying at 72 km/h within a radius of 8 kilometres of the operator or “pilot”.
The drones are at the disposal of the Ecological Patrol of the Policía Local and will also be used for operations requiring crowd control, emergency situations and road accident reconstructions, according to Mayor José Ballesta. They have been acquired at a cost of 9,000 euros and are equipped with megaphone devices to allow officers to communicate with colleagues, members of the public and suspects on the ground, heat-sensitive cameras and floodlights, as well as parachutes which will open automatically in the case of mid-air breakdowns.
