ARCHIVED - Mazarrón opens its beaches from Monday 25th
There are no footwashes or showers at the moment but at least sunseekers can swim and sit on the beach now
There are currently no restrictions physically in place on the beaches in the Mazarrón municipality which have re-opened from Monday 25th May as the Murcia Region enters phase 2 of the de-escalation process.
Bathers are free to swim, sit on the beach and practice sport providing that social distancing is maintained and beach users observe basic hygiene protocols.
Beaches have re-opened as part of phase 2, and although the Health Ministry has issued a stream of do’s and don´ts for municipal councils and beach users to observe as part of wider measures to make holidays in Spain safe this summer, most of them are inapplicable at the moment simply because our local councils were only issued with the information on Saturday and have had little time to prepare for the re-opening of their beaches.
At the moment most are not panicking, as there are so few people using the beaches during May, and for most, the need to enforce social distancing and apply cleaning measures won´t become a pressure until the middle of June.
So for now, the beaches in the Mazarrón municipality are open for use, although there are no footwash or shower facilities currently available.
The council will have to intensify cleaning of the toilets which have already been installed and the Mayor has already complained that the council will be obliged to contract further personnel this summer at the cost of around 100,000 euros to enforce the regulations on the beaches once it gets busier, but then so have all the other Mayors on the coast who say they have been given no extra financial support from either the regional or national governments to help them meet what will undoubtedly be the additional costs of complying with safety regulations this summer.
Neither it must be said, have most of the businesses who don´t have 32 million euros worth of budgets to spend every year and are also struggling to remain solvent through this Covid crisis.
However, 50 people in the municipality will have jobs watching beachgoers this summer as a result so there is a silver lining after all!
Later in the season our councils will be using drones to ensure that bathers are behaving themselves and some will even be cordoning off 4 metre squares of sand to ensure that we all social distance, but for the moment Mazarrón beaches are open for your enjoyment!
Click on the link to the Murcia beach guide which gives detailed information about all the beaches in the Murcia Region including those in the Mazarrón municipality. There is certainly plenty of choice in Mazarrón, including wide urban beaches and lots of wild coves.
