ARCHIVED - Guided tours and drama performances banned in the cemeteries of the Region of Murcia
The Diocese of Cartagena seeks to maintain decorum in burial grounds throughout the Region
It seems likely that there will be a rash of cancellations regarding events scheduled all over the Region of Murcia to coincide with All Saints’ Day on 1st November after the Diocese of Cartagena (which includes the whole of the Region) issued a ban on Wednesday on all “cultural and tourist” use of cemeteries.
In a letter which has been made public Bishop José Manuel Lorca Planes reminded all relevant authorities that within cemeteries it is necessary to create an atmosphere which is conducive to worship, piety and religious activity, rather than promoting them as tourist attractions. In consequence, the Diocese will from now on not permit guided tours or dramatic performances of the kind which have become increasingly popular in recent years, particularly in late October and early November when cemeteries are visited by a very large proportion of the population: in Spain it is a widely observed tradition for people to visit the last resting places of their departed loved ones on or around All Saints’ Day.
For this reason cemeteries are generally spruced up in preparation for 1st November and in many of the 45 municipalities in the Region of Murcia, including Jumilla, special events are held there. In some cases performances of the play “Don Juan Tenorio”, which has become synonymous with All Saints’ Day in this country, are held in the open air and culminate with the final graveyard scene being performed in or just outside the municipal cemetery: the case of San Javier on the shore of the Mar Menor is one of the better known, with a concert inside the burial ground having been held in recent years.
