ARCHIVED - Brigitte Bardot Foundation delegate visits feral cat sterilization scheme in Caravaca
The organization was founded by the former actress 12 years after her retirement from the cinema
The Brigitte Bardot Foundation, which has been dedicated to animal protection since 1986, has sent a delegation to Caravaca de la Cruz in the north-west of the Region of Murcia to oversee the project to sterilize colonies of feral cats in the municipality.
The sterilization campaign is a joint project undertaken by the Town Hall of Caravaca in collaboration with the Econciencia group and the purpose of the Bardot Foundation’s visit is to analyse the way in which awareness of animal rights and protection is being promoted in the town and to take part in the program to capture, sterilize and re-release stray and feral cats in the locality. It is two years since members of Econciencia first contacted the foundation, which has over 57,000 members and 300 inspectors, and during that time financial support has been given.
Delegate Brigitte Auloy visited some of the feline colonies in the company of Econciencia volunteers and met representatives of the council, exchanging ideas and making suggestions as to how to improve various aspects of the initiative, and also present was the councillor responsible for animal protection in the neighbouring municipality of Cehegín, Juan Martínez.
The Foundation was created by the French actress Brigitte Bardot in 1986, twelve years after she announced her retirement from the cinema, and is involved principally in the funding animal shelter groups and sterilization campaigns. Much of the initial financing of the group was provided by the former actress auctioning off her jewellery and various items related to her film career, and the foundation is now active in 60 countries around the world.
