ARCHIVED - August 11 Sea turtle information point at Playa Larga in Calblanque
In 2019 the regional park of Calblanque saw the first laying of loggerhead turtle eggs in Murcia for over 100 years
In recent years the plight of sea turtles in the Mediterranean, their existence threatened by marine pollution and climate change, has become far more widely known, and the campaign to publicize the cause continues at Playa Larga in the Regional Park of Calblanque from 10.00 to 12.00 on August 11.
A mobile information point will be installed to help people learn about the different types of sea turtle living in the western Mediterranean and how to help protect them.
In July 2019, at the nearby cove of Cala Arturo, the first successful laying of loggerhead eggs in Murcia in living memory was confirmed. Prior to that, the last recorded instance of a member of the Caretta caretta species laying its eggs in Murcia was in La Manga in the late 19th century – and there are some doubts over the reliability of that information - but after the distinctive tracks left by the turtle’s flippers were found in the sand in 2019 it was confirmed that the female who clambered out of the water onto the sand in Cala Arturo did indeed deposit her eggs there.
