ARCHIVED - Environmental education for children on the beach in San Pedro del Pinatar
Education and awareness among youngsters provides hope for the future at the beach of Villananitos
It is often said that children are the future, and if that is the case then there must be great hope for the marine environment in the Mar Menor as educators, parents and the youngsters themselves ensure that the importance of protecting the lagoon is treated as a priority in primary and secondary schools in the area.
This was clearly illustrated on Monday morning as the day after World Wetlands Day was marked by 500 pupils and primary schools in the municipalities of San Pedro del Pinatar and Cartagena converging on the beach of Villananitos at the northern end of the Mar Menor to send an SOS message to the administrators, legislators and politicians who must decide on how to approach the problems caused by the alteration of the water quality over recent decades. The artist Goyo203 was on hand to create an image of the occasion, as was the Mayoress of san Pedro del Pinatar, while the children sang songs, read poems and formed a giant SOS on the sand: behind them the need for action was underlined by the algae which have turned the surface of the lagoon green in recent weeks, clearly visible both in the aerial photographs published by the Town Hall of San Pedro and in others taken on land.
The regional government is organizing various activities to commemorate World Wetlands Day during February, including a photographic “gymkhana” entitled “Las Encañizadas”. This follows an 11.9-kilometre route and participants should collect a route map at the Las Salinas visitors’ centre in San Pedro in order to follow it.
In addition, on 6th and 7th February a guided visit called “Entre dos Aguas” is being held between 10.00 and 13.00 on the path between the Mar Menor and the salt flats of San Pedro.
