As part of these efforts, the council is currently implementing the Tourism Sustainability Plan in Destination ‘Discover Águilas’, a project financed by the European Union through the Next Generation EU funds under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
A crucial aspect of this initiative has been a comprehensive study to identify key areas within the town centre that require additional shading, particularly in locations with high tourist footfall.
The findings highlighted Calle Conde de Aranda as a priority for shade installations. To address this need, the Town Council has planned the installation of awnings along the pedestrian street. These will be supported by masts positioned on either side of the street to avoid impacting existing buildings.
In a similarly motivated move, the local Department of Green Areas rceently planted 25 trees in the Los Jardines area as a way of trying to create more shaded areas in the town for the coming summer.
These measures, aimed at managing and preventing “climate-related risks”, reflects the municipality’s commitment to fostering a high-quality tourist environment. By making urban spaces more visitor-friendly, Águilas aims to reinforce its capacity for adaptation and resilience in response to climate change.
