ARCHIVED - 2,000 residents march to demand flood protection for Los Alcázares
Angry locals make themselves heard after three floods along the shore of the Mar Menor in four months
Over 2,000 people are reported to have taken part in a march and demonstration on Sunday in which residents of Los Alcázares again demanded measures to protect the town from the kind of flooding it suffered last week for the third time in four months.
"No se puede vivir así" (we can’t live like this!) was one of the slogans daubed on banners and placards as the demonstrators showed their indignation at what they perceive as a lack of action on the part of the regional and national governments. Joining the residents of Los Alcázares were others from nearby towns including Santiago de la Ribera and Torre Pacheco, whose homes have also been flooded more than once in the last couple of years as heavy rain cascades down towards the Mar Menor from the Campo de Cartagena.
After circling the town the march came to an end and Santiago Pérez, the leader of the Stop Inundaciones platform group, read a manifesto calling for action to protect not only Los Alcázares but also the Mar Menor itself.
