ARCHIVED - 13 per cent of those arrested for violence in Catalunya are non-Spaniards
Radicals from all over Europe descend on Barcelona to cause violent clashes with police
Such is the nature of the pro-separatist demonstrations which dominated the news last week in Catalunya that the arrival of heavy rain due to a “gota fría” storm on Monday brought a lull in the civil unrest, and as observers took stock of the events since long prison sentences were decided upon for 9 separatist leaders it has emerged that 25 of the 194 people arrested are not Spanish.
What this appears to confirm is that a significant amount of the violence between demonstrators and the forces of law and order has been caused not by over-zealous Catalans whose displeasure at the Supreme Court sentences spilled over into violence, or indeed by violent policing, but by individuals or groups who attended marches and demonstrations not only in the expectation of violence but with the intention of causing and taking part in it. This impression is further reinforced by the fact that many of the protesters arrived at the scene of demonstrations wearing hoods, scarves across their faces and other items designed to conceal their identity, a measure which would surely be considered unnecessary by separatists intent on staging a peaceful demonstration.
Among the 154 arrested by the Mossos d’Esquadra (the regional police force), 32 by the Policía Nacional and 8 by the Guardia Civil it is also reported that 31 are under the age of 18 and that 22 are w omen. At present 24 are being held in jail.
These data come in the light of police sources reporting that behind the violence on the streets of major cities in Catalunya is a hard-core nucleus of around 500 radical extremists and anarchists determined to cause disorder and chaos, including various individuals from outside Spain. Acting as “urban guerrillas”, they are reported to be using the struggle for independence in Catalunya as a smokescreen for their own subversive and violent ends, with the non-Spaniards having participated in similar violent episodes in Greece, France, Germany and Italy.
